O'Neil joined the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when she was in high school. She was able to make it into the top 100 rounds following the judges' praise for her voice. O'Neil was praised highly by her judges. She was a victim of significant loss during the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted into the bottom three and second-bottom two places, respectively. The judges were awed by her performance and advised viewers to choose contestants who sang well like Melissa. O'Neil's performance was so consistently good, that he did not fall into the bottom 3. Following two stunning performances on September 7, 2005, when O'Neil and Rex Goudie made it to the final two competitors, the judge Werner reportedly predicted that the newspapers in the early morning were going to read O'Neil defeated Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and the youngest winner of the show's time . O'Neil was promptly congratulated by Canadian PM Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
